How deep would you plunge for some extra coins? Watch two audience members jump head first into a pit of balls in hopes of finding the grand prize 500 bucks! The phrase diving for dollars was used in the movie America Pie. The king of gods. The term refers to someone who does not have any money. They look in and around every place possible to find some.
I did the scuba diving resort course for 90 dollars in Cancun. And I love it. I did have some problems with my buoyancy control, but I know I can improve.
My question is I make 40,000 a year. Is scuba diving too expensive for me?
Hi Roy,
Diving For Dollars Extreme Cheapskate Episode
First let me say congratulations on taking a resort course. I am glad you enjoyed scuba diving and it only gets better from here.Driving For Dollars Worksheet
Don't worry about the buoyancy control issue at this point - it is a matter of practice. It gets easier and better with each dive.Diving For Dollars American Reunion
Now, for the question of 'Is scuba diving too expensive for me?' Unfortunately, there is no one answer to that.People could make $100,000 a year and be so much in debt that they couldn't afford to go diving. Whether it is too expensive for you is really an individual issue.
I will not say that scuba diving is cheap. Because it is not. But it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. You can dive close to home, in the ocean, lakes, quarries, etc. That way you won't have an added expense of an overseas trip.
Of course, if you want to dive in the Caribbean, that's another story. But even there, some locations are cheaper than others. You can find lots of prices online for shops on various islands.
We have a page on the cost of scuba diving which you can check out. It gives you a range you might expect to pay for getting certified and than doing some recreational dives.
Depending on your individual situation, I don't think scuba diving has to be out of reach. It's all about choices anyway, isn't it? What do you want to spend your disposable income on?
It's all up to you. Let us know how it goes.
Dianne
